Mount Kilimanjaro, with its three volcanic cones, “Kibo”, “Mawenzi”, and “Shira”, is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa, and rises approximately 4,900 metres from its base to 5,895 metres above sea level.

It is one of the most tourist attractions that is not missed of most of the travelers visiting Tanzania. While planning for your safari to Tanzania you can combine the mount Kilimanjaro hiking with the amazing African wildlife species like the African big 5 and the great wildebeest migration.

Kilimanjaro hiking is done via 4 routes which include the Machame Route, Rongai Route, Shira Route and Lemosho Route and you can combine the hiking in Tanzania with the hiking in DRC Congo trekking the active Nyiragongo Volcano.

Or you can combine it with Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Park. Most of travelers willing to combine mountain adventure with gorilla trekking tours in Africa you can visit Uganda, Rwanda and DRC Congo.

Below are the detailed trekking packages and you can choose one and contact us and we shall customize for you the best hiking holiday in Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro climbing Machame Route 7 Days

Day: 1 Arrive in Arusha

Arrive anytime at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). We will arrange a private transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). To Arusha at Ilboru Safari Lodge, where the rest of the day is at leisure. We stay at Ilboru Safari Lodge, which is beautifully located on the slope of Mt. Meru and is a perfect place to prepare for your adventure.
We will gather in the hotel for a pre – climb briefing and an equipment check. We will also confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance.

Day 2: Machame Hut (3,000 m); 6-8 hours walking

The climb starts from Machame Gate (1,800 m.) after a short walk through the attractive banana and coffee farms of Machame village. The path follows a ridge through dense montane forest. This is the richest forested area on the mountain, and also the zone from where 96 % of the water on Kilimanjaro originates. On sunny days, and especially in the dry season, this section is very lush and beautiful; it can also be a very muddy experience, particularly if it has rained recently! We have lunch at ‘Halfway Clearing’, a small opening in the trees, and continue climbing steadily. The gradient becomes gentler as the forest slowly merges into giant heather close to the next camp near the ruins of Machame Hut. We may get our first closer look at the glaciated dome of Kibo if the evening clouds permit.

Day 3:  Shira Hut (3,840m); 4-6 hours walking

A shorter day that begins by climbing up a steep ridge to reach a small semicircular cliff known as Picnic Rock. There are excellent views of Kibo and the jagged rim of Shira Plateau from here, and it is a good rest point too! The trail continues less steeply to reach the Shira Plateau.  We camp near Shira Hut (3,840m.) which has some of the most stunning views on Kilimanjaro; close to the huge volcanic cone of Kibo, the spectacular rock formations of Shira Plateau, and looking across to Mt. Meru floating on the clouds.

Day 4: Great Barranco valley (3,900 m.); 5-7 hours walking

A morning of gentle ascent and panoramic views, leaving the moorland plateau behind to walk on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. After lunch near the Lava Tower junction (4,550 m.) we descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley (3,900 m.), sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below.

Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,000 m); 4-5 hours walking

A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Ice fields. The terrain changes to screen, with pockets of lush vegetation in sheltered hollows, and there is only a short distance to our camp at Karanga (4,000 m.), the last water point on the approach to Barafu, in a narrow valley. There is plenty of time to rest, or for a short optional acclimatization walk in the afternoon up the valley above the camp.

Day 6:  Barafu Campsite (4,600 m.); 3-4 hours walking

A short but steep climb out of Karanga, and an easy path on compacted screen with wide views to reach Mweka Junction (4,150 m.). We then climb steadily to reach the Barafu campsite (4,600 m.) and continue to the plateau at the bottom of the South-East valley (4,800 m.). The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before an early night.

Day 7: Mweka forest camp (3100 m); 13-15 hours walking

We will start our ascent by torchlight at about 1 a.m. so that we can be up on the Crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic screen has some well-graded zig – zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point (5,735 m), in about five or six hours. We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, and after some refreshment, we continue to descend to reach our final Mweka Forest Camp.

Day 8: Mweka forest camp to Mweka Gate (1,650 m); 3-4 hours walking

A sustained descent through lovely forest with lush undergrowth takes us to Mweka National Park gate.

We hike through a true wilderness area towards the jagged Mawenzi Peak, then cross a barren desert saddle, before climbing up Kibo’s eastern crater wall. The Rongai route is a more gradual ascent, and is therefore preferred by those with little or no backpacking experience, but is equally enjoyable for even the most hardened trekkers.

Day1: Arrive in Marangu

Arrive anytime at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). We will arrange a private transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). To Marangu at Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort, where the rest of the day is at leisure. We stay at Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort, which is beautifully located on the lower slopes of Mt. The climb begins from Nale Moru (1,950 m) on a small path that wind through fields of maize and potatoes before entering pine forest. The track then starts to climb consistently, but gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife, including the beautiful Kilimanjaro Columbus monkey. These monkeys are black with a long ‘cape’ of white hair and a flowing white tail. The forest begins to thin out and the first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone, Rongai One Camp (2,600 m) with extensive views over the Kenyan plains.

Day3: Second Cave’ (3,450 m); 3-4 hours walking

This is only a morning walk up to the campsite at ‘Second Cave’ (3,450 m). The walk is a steady ascent with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. The afternoon can be spent enjoying the view over the Kenyan plains or doing a short acclimatization walk up towards Third Cave.

Day4: Kikelewa Caves (3.600 m); 3-4 hours walking

We now leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Our campsite is in a sheltered valley with giant senecios near Kikelewa Caves (3.600 m).  After lunch, there is time to explore the valley or to rest.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m); 3-4 hours walking

A short but steep climb is rewarded by superb all round views and a tangible sense of wilderness. We leave vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m), spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization.

Day6: Kibo campsite (4,700m); 5-6 hours walking

We cross the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite (4,700m) at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night.

Day7: Horombo Hut (3,720 m); 11-15 hours walking

We will start the final, and by far the steepest and most demanding, part of the climb by torchlight around 1 a.m. We plod very slowly in the darkness on a switchback trail through loose volcanic screen to reach the crater rim at Gillman’s Point (5,685 m) We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three hour round trip to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Kibo (4,700 m) is surprisingly fast and, after some refreshment, we continue the descent to reach our final campsite at Horombo (3,720 m).

Day8: National Park gate at Marangu (1,830 m); 5-6 hours walking

A steady descent takes us down through moorland to Mandara Hut (2,700m), the first stopping place at the Marangu route. We then continue descending through lovely lush forest on a good path to the National Park gate at Marangu (1,830 m).

Day9: Marangu to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) Private departure transfer is included

There is a tangible sense of wilderness here, especially when the afternoon mists roll in. From our camp near Shira Hut (12,600 ft), we take in the unforgettable views of Mt. Meru as she floats among the clouds.

Day4: Moir Hut (4,200m); 3-4 hours walking

The morning walk is a steady climb away from the moorland of Shira Plateau to reach the broad upland desert beneath the Lent Hills, with expansive views in all directions.
